I’m sure you’ve heard it before — the “Hawaii of Europe.” It’s a term tossed around almost interchangeably when talking about the Portuguese archipelago of Azores and Madeira. While I totally get the sentiment behind the comparison, I think the Azores (and Madeira) deserve more than a vague comparison. Sure, the Azores share volcanic origins and lush greenery with Hawaii, but they're woven with threads of European charm, Portuguese heritage, and a unique island soul that's all their own — think cobbled streets instead of surf shacks, pastel houses instead of beach bungalows, and vinho verde instead of mai tais.

So while it’s entirely possible to sample a little bit of 2-3 islands in a week (although admittedly, it would be incredibly rushed), today I will be focusing on the island of São Miguel.

São Miguel is the largest island, and it packs a punch when it comes to diversity. Think steaming geothermal pools bubbling amidst crater lakes, waterfalls cascading into the ocean, volcanic calderas sculpted by ancient eruptions, and lush pastures dotted with hydrangeas blooming in every shade of blue and purple. It's the kind of place where you can hike a volcano in the morning, soak in a hot spring by lunchtime, and sip Azorean gin cocktails with a dramatic ocean view at sunset.

That’s the argument that sold me on my first trip to São Miguel in May of 2023, and why I’m headed straight back for another week in September 2024. You’ll notice that in both trips I’ve made a distinctive effort to avoid the height of summer. As you can imagine, it’s also height of the tourist season— prices are higher to match demand and the island will most definitely feel crowded. In May, the weather was comfortable but the ocean far too cold for swimming. September should be a bit more favorable to squeeze in some beach time.

How to Get There

From the US, you will be able to fly into São Miguel’s capital city of Ponta Delgada from most major cities. SATA Azores Airlines offers nonstop flights to Azores from Toronto (year round), Montreal (July-August), Boston (year round) and Oakland (June-September). United Airlines flies nonstop to Ponta Delgada from Newark, NJ, while TAP Air Portugal flies to Azores with a layover in Lisbon. This could be a good option if you’re looking to extend your stay in Portugal by using TAP’s free stopover program.

Note: if you plan on exploring the island, you will need a car. Be sure to book early (7-9 months out if visiting during high season), particularly if you need an automatic transmission.

Where to Stay

To make the most of your time on the island without too much driving on a daily basis, I recommend splitting your week between two hotels or resorts. Consider staying on the eastern end of the island to best explore that often missed region, and finishing your stay a little closer to Ponta Delgada if you have an early flight home.

7 Day Itinerary

Day One: Ponta Delgada

If you’re flying in from the US, you’ll likely be fresh off a red eye flight with some time to kill before checking into your hotel room. Take the day to explore Ponta Delgada at leisure, sample the cuisine and kick back as you settle into vacation mode.

Portas da Cidade: This iconic 18th-century city gate is a must-see, with its three arches made from volcanic rock. Imagine yourself arriving by sea centuries ago and stepping into the bustling town.
Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral: This lively main square is the heart of Ponta Delgada, named after the island's first governor. Soak up the vibrant atmosphere, grab a coffee at a cafe, and watch the world go by.
Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião: This Gothic-style church is the oldest in Ponta Delgada, dating back to the 15th century. Admire its intricate architecture and the beautiful stained glass windows.
Museu Carlos Machado: This fascinating museum delves into the history and culture of the Azores, showcasing artifacts from archaeology, geology, and religious art.
Mercado da Graça: This lively market is a great place to sample local Azorean delicacies, from fresh seafood and pineapples to traditional cheeses and wines.

Day Two: Sete Cidades

The weather in Azores can be quite unreliable on a day-to-day, so I recommend booking your weather dependent activities early in your trip just in case you need to rebook. One of the highlights from my trip was a 3.5 hour ATV ride in Sete Cidades with Azores Outdoor Activities. On our scheduled day, the clouds were incredibly low on the mountains and we opted to reschedule our tour for later in the week, which turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.

If ATVs aren’t your speed, there are numerous hiking trails here that will take you around the calderas or up to view points for incredible panoramas of the lagoons. The two major viewpoints with the best views are Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno.

After a day exploring the lush mountains, visit Ponta da Ferraria, a natural swimming pool heated by a nearby thermal hot spring. Visit during low tide to enjoy the spring-fed water. Otherwise, if you’d prefer something a little warmer, head over to the wellness complex nearby and soak in its heated pool (for a fee). By the time you’re done relaxing, you’ll be just in time to catch a stunning sunset at Mosteiro Beach.

Day Three: Whale Watching

The Azores lie on the migration routes of various whale species, making it a hotspot for whale watching. Sperm whales, blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales, and dolphins are just some of the beauties you might encounter on your tour. The best time for whale watching in São Miguel is between April and October when the majority of whale species migrate through the area. However, even outside these peak months, you can still spot dolphins and other marine life.

Just like the ATV tour I recommended above, try to book your whale watching tour early in case it needs to be rescheduled. And of course, be sure to book early because these tours often sell out. Day Four: Lagoa do Fogo

If the weather cooperates, a visit to Lagoa do Fogo will blow you away. This stunning crater lake sits amidst volcanic peaks, offering breathtaking views. Hike to the rim for panoramic vistas from top viewpoints like Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa and Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo. Be sure to capture those Instagram-worthy shots!

Note: as of June 2023, in an effort to decrease traffic to the area and preserve the landscape during the summer months, access to Lagoa do Fogo is only possible by shuttle.

Feeling adventurous? Head on over to Cascata do Salto do Cabrito, a 20-meter waterfall cascading into a natural pool. Don't forget your swimsuit – a dip under the cascading water is an absolute must! Tip: follow the road downhill to a dedicated parking lot. It will be steep, but worth it to avoid that climb back uphill.

Cap off your day with pure pampering at the thermal baths of Caldeira Velha. These natural hot springs, surrounded by lush greenery, are the perfect way to unwind and let your muscles soak in the mineral-rich waters. Book your spot in advance, as these baths are popular!

Day Five: Nordeste

Ditch the crowds and head to Nordeste, São Miguel's northeastern treasure. This charming village and its surroundings offer stunning landscapes, hidden wonders, and a taste of slow-paced Azorean life.

Nordeste Village: Stroll through Vila do Nordeste's colorful streets, admiring pastel houses and volcanic stone architecture. Visit the historic Igreja Matriz de São Jorge and the iconic Ponte dos 7 Arcos bridge. Come during the warmer months to see the village burst with flowers.
Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park: Hike through this lush park, admiring waterfalls, lakes, and diverse Macaronesian plants. If you’re craving a bit of adventure, join a 3 hour guided canyoning experience.
Breathtaking Views: For jaw-dropping panoramas, visit Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada. Relax at Ponta do Sossego, named for its tranquility, and admire hidden coves and lush gardens. Ponta da Madrugada boasts some of the island's most stunning sunrises – imagine the fiery sky over fragrant flower gardens!
Arnel Lighthouse: Feel the wind on your face at Farol do Arnel, the island's first lighthouse. Climb the stairs for panoramic views and learn about its fascinating history.

Day Six: Furnas

Nestled in a volcanic crater on the eastern side of São Miguel Island, Furnas is a unique town that blends geothermal magic with Azorean charm. Imagine bubbling fumaroles hissing steam, steaming hot springs inviting you to soak, and lush gardens blooming with exotic plants – that's Furnas in a nutshell.

Lagoa das Furnas: This serene crater lake is a picture-perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a boat ride. Soak up the sun, enjoy a picnic on the shore, or visit the Neo-Gothic church perched on its banks.
Cozido das Furnas: This traditional stew is cooked in the earth using the volcanic heat. Earthenware pots filled with meat, vegetables, and potatoes are buried deep in the ground for hours, resulting in a flavorful and hearty dish that's a must-try.
Hot Springs: Furnas is famous for its thermal waters, perfect for soaking away a week worth of hikes and adventures. Dip into the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden's thermal pool and take a stroll around its gardens. Every corner is a perfect photo opportunity.

If you have some time left in your day, take a short 20 minute drive to Chá Gorreana along the Northern coast. This tea planation is Europe’s oldest, where you can enjoy a complimentary cup of tea and delicious pastry, stock up on gifts or take a tour of the facility to witness the traditional tea-making process. Cross the road and walk through the plantation itself, which has sweeping views of the island and ocean.

Day Seven

Take the last day to explore areas you might have missed, or simply take it easy and dive a little bit deeper into Ponta Delgada.

If you’re not through with adventure, consider visiting Gruta do Carvão, where you descend with a guide into an ancient lava tube.
